Dems vs Repubs: The Christian Debate

I don't really find that Republicans very often affirmatively declare that Republican principles are consistent with Christianity. They are more likely to simply believe in Republican principles (like freedom and independence) and when a Democrat asserts that Dem principles are more consistent with Chrisian principles, the GOP'r will say things like:

"Jesus never said we should give to the government." Or, "Republicans believe in charity more than Democrats," etc.

But, it doesn't seem like Republicans are able to pull out scriptural principles and use them to support their politics. In other words, they are more defensive than offensive in their use of scripture to support their politics.

This could be because overwhelmingly, scripture says things like -- "love your neighbor, blessed are the peacemakers, treat immigrants as citizens, blessed are the poor, woe are the rich, etc."

Certainly Ayn Rand's conservative philosophy of individual freedom over community good is unChristian. So, all this may explain why Republicans rarely tie their politics to their religion in a substantive way.

Anyway, here's an interesting debate about this that refers back to a series of other articles -- by a conservative and a liberal debating this very issue:

How Big is the Gospel?
